Books and Magazines

There are many handmade greeting card resources on craft books and magazines available and you don't have to go purchase everything on the shelf to get started on making your handmade cards. So, selecting the right books and magazines is really important to help you get started on making greeting cards or to help give you ideas on designs.

Tips on choosing a book or magazine

  • For a beginner, choose books and magazines that feature simple handmade card designs with clear instructions. Preferably one that uses simple techniques and tools.

(TIP: look for the sections that feature tools and techniques used in the specific book/magazine. If there are too many complicated techniques and sophisticated tools used in that particular book, it may be more suitable for seasoned card makers.)

Making Greeting Cards for BeginnersOne of the best beginner cardmaking books is the "Making Greeting Cards for Beginners" as it uses non-complicated techniques in showing the reader how to make personalized greetings cards.

There are 20 step-by-step projects explained in detail, using a variety of craft techniques, including collage, layers, tissue, knitwear, ribbon, embroidery, sponging and potato printing.

  • For someone who is comfortable in exploring new techniques, it really depends on which area of interest you have.

For example, an experienced scrapbooker who is interesting in learning more rubber stamping techniques to make cards, it is recommended to select books that integrates both rubber stamping and scrapbooking techniques so that you will be "inspired" on how to use the two techniques together.

Trust me! People will say, if you want to learn about rubber stamping techniques, just get a book/magazine on complete rubber stamping. But it may be just too overwhelming looking at pure rubber stamped cards and at a loss at how to use your scrapbook techniques to incorporate into your rubber stamped cards.

  • Select a book with wider range of ideas is preferred as it allows more window to explore different techniques and creativity, rather than a book focusing on a specific technique.

  • So which book should I start with?

The featured books and magazines are just some of the publications I highly recommend to get more cardmaking ideas. The projects are easy to follow and the clear pictures on each page gives you a better view of the overall card design.
